If harvested too late, the lower capsule will burst and the seed will fall off, which will also affect the yield.

Generally, sesame seeds can be harvested when they are mature. When the plants begin to fall leaves, the pods turn yellow, and the seeds appear the inherent color of the variety, it indicates that the sesame seeds of the variety are mature, and then they can be harvested manually or mechanically. When it comes to time, spring sesame is generally harvested in the middle and late August, summer sesame is generally harvested from the end of August to the beginning of September, and autumn sesame is generally harvested in the late September.


How should sesame be harvested?

1. Manual harvesting

Manual harvesting is done with a sickle. After cutting, a small bundle is usually bundled every 30 plants, and 3-5 bundles are dried together in the surface shed. After threshing for 2-3 times, they can be returned to the warehouse. However, the sesame seeds can only be harvested by manual beating and exposed to the sun at noon. The sesame shuttle will smash the opening and leak out the sesame seeds, then collect them together and use a dustpan to remove the impurities.

2. Mechanical harvesting

Mechanical operation ability is strong, and mechanical harvesting is the first choice for large-scale planting, which is much faster than manual work. Traditional manual planting can only be harvested through several processes, such as baling, drying and threshing. Now a special harvester can be used directly to harvest, thresh, separate, clear and gather sesame at one time, saving about 40% of labor costs.

3. Pay attention to seed reservation

When harvesting sesame, pay attention to keeping seeds. Sesame seed retention is mainly carried out in the field. The selection standard is that the plant is healthy and disease free, the characters are consistent, mature and neat, the capsule part is low, the capsule is tightly grown, and the disease resistance is strong.
